You know what is hard? Flat marathon training. After 8 years running trails, I finally took the motivation to register myself for a flat city marathon. This will be my first ever flat (38 meters of elevation!) marathon and I want to push my body to the limit.

My PRs on a marathon can’t be really taken seriously:

3 hours 5 minutes and few cents on the Muttenz Marathon (1000 meters of elevation gain!)

3 hours 00 minutes and 59 seconds !!!! on the Frauenfeld Marathon (500 meters of elevation gain!)

So this time, it’s obvious I want the sub 3 hours. Get fasta or die tryin’ is my motto. I even said I’ll nail my running shoes to the wall if I don’t make it. This is how I put pressure on myself.

I’m really trying my best to get faster and get comfortable at that pace I need to keep up with. My plan is to do negative splits.

14 km @4:20 min/km

14 km @4:15 min/km

14.2 km @4:10 min/km

Should just bring me at around 2 hours 59 minutes and 20 seconds to the finish line.

For running this flat surfaces, I’m using the Altra Escalante 2.5

2nd October is the Cologne Marathon in germany. Wish me luck. btw: my garmin watch is still predicting 03:05 for marathon, damn you Garmin!

Marathon training is hard

Why a never ran the Scenic Trail

ready to rumble – NOT

It’s been some time since my last post on my page. Don’t get me wrong, I was hoping I could write sooner about my results of Scenic Trail.

Truth is I never got to the start line. My very first DNS. I thought DNF would be more likely, but shit happens.

I travelled with a friend to Tesserete on Friday. In the evening I was supposed to start my biggest race ever. The race I’ve been training for 6 months long. BUT - I started getting a headache in the car.

This progressively got worse. By dinnenr I was having trouble getting some food down and shaking without control. I was getting very cold, although it was very hot outide. A few minutes after getting some food down, I started directly having the feeling to have to throw up everything.

So I decided with my friend to not start my night race at 10 PM. Very hard decision, but the only one I could take in that moment.

The frustration was very big. I had fever in the night, which approved my decision even more. I don’t want to know what could have happened if I went out there on the trails during the night, at 2000 meters of altitude.

Nevertheless, I needed some time off from blogging, from social media. But after a good two weeks, I decided to look forward. There is no other choice. You cannot change the past.

So my next big thing is getting to Köln Marathon feeling healthy. My project to finally get that sub 3 hour marathon is fully ongoing. I will update you soon about it.

ready to rumble – NOT

training completed ?

ready to rumble

I completed my training. The build up worked more or less. All 5 cycles were completed, and after a few biking days with a dear friend, I’m tapering my way until next week.

You may recall me posting about my training plan for this year.

My first cycle is done, meaning I’ve got 4 weeks of training behind me. How did it go?

Well, it was quite good for starters. The first week was basically just returning to training after my honeymoon. 2nd & 3rd week were focusing on building, interval training, hill repeats and what not.

Last week I just tried to make lots of km, 80 for being precise.

What was special this time: I did everything with a HR monitor attached to my chest.

So 2022 just started and I decided during my honeymoon, that I want to try another time to take part a the Scenic Trail this year.

I still got a starting place from 2020, and I hope I can participate in the K119 race, which will be my longest ultra marathon ever.

Plan

I created a training plan on my own with some numbers of what mileage and elevation gain I want to achieve week per week. It builds up in every cycle. The cycle repeats itself every 4 week by starting with a recovery or deload week and ending with a high mileage week.

I’ll try to stick to it. Let’s hope for the best.

My highest mileage week will have 125 Km and 3400 meters of elevation gain, I’ll have 5 cycles and hope that the training deload from my honeymoon (from christmas up until now) will not have a lot of effect on my overall fitness.

Here you have a quick glance at it:

Other than that, I still got a starting place at the Marathon Hohe Winde from 2020. This will be held on the 19. March 2022, right in a recovery week meh.

2022 and races?

week 18 recap

Sum up

Recovery week, or nearly. I did over 54 km on the bike at once, with over 1300 meters of elevation. That was reallly tough. I felt my legs afterwards and I think it was not that good of an idea to do it in a recovery week. Also I had to postpone my sport massage to next week, which is also not optimal. What is done is done, let’s look forward.
